Care Identity Service (CIS) upgrade postponed

The national CIS upgrade, that was scheduled to take place from 6.30pm on Friday 7 May to 8pm on Monday 10 May 2021, has been postponed.

The national Care Identity Service (CIS) upgrade, that was scheduled to take place from 6.30pm on Friday 7 May to 8pm on Monday 10 May 2021, has been postponed. As such smartcard administration services including smartcard self-service unlock are now back online.

The CIS is the national system for authenticating, registering and issuing NHS smartcards. During the upgrade, a small number of technical problems were experienced with the users of some 3rd party applications unable to authenticate. This necessitated the need to roll back CIS to the original platform and postpone the upgrade. As a result, the upgrade of the CIS system will be re-scheduled by NHS Digital for a future date. Further information will be circulated in due course.

If you have issues with the CIS system or smartcard authentication, please contact your IT Service Desk.
